the tribe of magic blends the funky, bouncing infleunce of the San Francisco Bay area with the in-your-face aesthetics of the East Coast. throw in a little tech house and tribal beats for seasoning, and you have the flavor of Jomai Etu; always pumping, always soulful. his dj sets are grand epics told in sound—stories filled with elation, drama, passion, even sometimes fear, sadness and tragedy. they read like a well-crafted book: leaving you anticipating each next chapter with a pounding heart until its sweaty, emotional climax. his original musick is intimate, sensual, and above all, always playful and coy.
the musick of jomai (formerly known as both dj princess petite and the blakk room baby) began life as a late night college radio experiment in 1990 in North Carolina. quickly growing beyond that radio show, Jomai later joined several others, forming “house dat”—to create the South's first and largest all house music party catering predominately to gays and lesbians of color. in 1998 jomai moved to san francisco. first playing for groove, faith, and worship, he became a resident at sugar as well as a regular at throwdown.com and the endup.
jomai etu now resides in brooklyn, playing for the Philadelphia Experiment, A Cavallo, Kostume Kult and others, appearing regularly in Burning Man, Philly and New York City. He is currently in production for three albums, Kosmoniq's Then I Woke Up on This Satellite…, House Fantasy (under his own name) and a new album for the gay funk/soul duo Supahero GoGo Star.
